Walrus

The Walrus-class submarine is the only submarine class currently in operation in the Royal Netherlands Navy. They have been in use since 1990 and are all named after sea mammals.

She is seen here approaching Faslane submarine base on the Clyde as part of the Joint Warrior Nato exercise of 2009.

Submarines

The Gareloch in the Firth of Clyde is home to HM Naval Base Clyde,it is home to the United Kingdom's strategic nuclear deterrent and the headquarters of the Royal Navy in Scotland.

The submarines are a familiar sight on the Clyde, nearly always escorted by RMAS tugs , miliatry police and Royal Marines!

Russian Submarine.

A bit of the beaten track for The River Clyde blog,I took these photographs in 1990 at Cairn Ryan.

The submarines in the breakers yard are Russian, I recall they made the news when they arrived as the tugs that towed them encountered stormy weather and one of the submarines almost sunk.
