In 1722 Johnshaven was recorded as the fifth‑largest fishing port in Scotland, with 26 boats employing about 130 fishermen.

Work started on building the canal in 1794, though it was finally opened in 1801. It provides a huge shortcut between the Inner Hebrides and the Clyde, avoiding the Kintyre peninsula. The canal was originally built for sailing and fishing vessels, and later the Clyde Puffers.

The most innovative aspect is her pair of vertical structures at the bow: these are Econowind rigid windfoils – a new generation of adjustable sails that rotate with the wind and generate aerodynamic lift similar to that of an aircraft wing. According to the manufacturer, the thrust generated is equivalent to around 80 square metres of conventional sail, helping reduce emissions and improve energy efficiency.
