Hi Colin,apparently this is the designated degaussing area for Royal Navy ships.It starts at the mouth of Loch Long and continues to Gourock. I watched wave knight degaussing a while back ,and it was quite interesting as she spent hours going up and down at a fair old speed,she often gave a blast of her horn to warn small boats to get out the way!

I've just looked up degaussing in wikipedia. I knew about it with monitors, and was aware of the potential issue with ships.
How do you know this ship was de-gaussing tho. Is this a regular place where de-gaussing is undertaken?
